Anesthesia

Last updated: Dec 2024

High-yield "What I Wish I Knew”:

  • No shelf exam for this rotation!

  • Great time to catch up on doctor’s appointments/life errands if you need to—you’ll probably be out by 4pm on most days

  • If you are interested, you can try to request a half-day opportunity with pain management or another specialty clinic through the anesthesia clerkship coordinator

What to expect for the rotation:

  • Anesthesia rotation is 2 weeks

  • You may be working with a combination of attendings, residents, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs)

  • Very hands on! You’ll be helping draw up/administering medications, starting IVs, intubating (often with a GlideScope camera where the attending can see what you’re doing), bag masking, helping transport patients.

Helpful studying resources (in addition to UWorld):

  • No shelf!

  • Can be helpful to watch some quick Youtube videos in advance on placing IVs

  • Openanesthesia.org - to look up specific topics like anesthetic considerations in thyroid surgeries, etc.

  • Anesthesiaconsiderations.com - great as a quick reference

  • If you want a textbook: Basics of Anesthesia 7th Edition – Manuel C. Pardo Jr. and Ronald D. Miller. Chapters 2, 13-14, 16, 17, 20, 23.
