Neurology

High-yield "What I Wish I Knew”:

  • Super helpful to review your neuro exam prior to the rotation start

  • Localizing the lesion will be key - helpful to review neuroanatomy (tracts, cranial nerves)

  • Some students find it helpful to carry a fanny-pack around the rotation (with reflex hammar, pen light)

What to expect for the rotation:

  • Neurology rotation is 4 weeks long. Generally you’ll have weekends off except for 1 weekend day you may need to go in to see consults. Hours ~7:30am - 5pm (will vary based on site)

  • Depending on your site, you may be on neurology primary service (people admitted to neurology, where their chief complaint is a neurological disease); consult service; or outpatient

  • You’ll likely see a mix of code strokes, movement disorders, possible altered mental status concerns. You’ll get really good at your neuro exam toward the end of the rotation!

Helpful studying resources (in addition to UWorld):

  • Clinical neurology & neuroanatomy : a localization-based approach (neuro textbook for medical students written by UCSF’s very own, Dr. Berkowitz - available on UCSF library website)
